This substanial collection comprises holographs, typescripts (including photocopies corrected and photocopy pasteups), dummies, illustrations in color and in inak and watercolor (some with overlays), proofs, jacket proofs, galleys. Also included are questionnaires with children's responses, and reviews. A section of the collection includes personal papers (involving the Kraus estate, his parents' estate, and house painting), patent information, royalty statements, biographical information, a copyright certificate, contract and agreements with various publishers and printers, accountants correspondence, notes and statements. Film information includes correspondence and flyers. Caldecott Awards and National Book Awards papers include dinner programs, correspondence, news releases and speech copies; Author's Guild newsletters are also included. General correspondence includes a substantial collection between Kraus and various authors and publishers. The Windmill Books papers collection includes correspondence, financial papers, and marketing records.

Herman Robert Kraus was a cartoonist for national magazines, the author and illustrator of children's books. He was president of Windmill Books, Inc from 1965, and president of Springfellow Books from 1972. His awards include several American Library Association notable books citations, a place on the Horn Book Honor List and a Children's Trade Book Award.
